Applications are now open for the 2026/2027 AIMS South Africa/DeepMind AI for Science Master Scholarship Program. This innovative program is part of AIMS South Africa Master degree in Mathematical Science and is made possible through a partnership with Google DeepMind.
The program sits at the exciting intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and the sciences, equipping young Africans with advanced skills in mathematics, machine learning, and AI-driven scientific research.
Program Overview
– Fully residential, one-year taught Master program with a research component
– First intake began in September 2023
– Designed for students passionate about mathematics, AI, and machine learning
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
– Be residents in Africa at the time of application
– Be citizens of any African country
– Have completed either:
– A four-year undergraduate degree, OR
– A three-year undergraduate degree plus an honours year (by August 2025, or December 2025 for Southern African applicants)
– Not have previously held a scholarship to study at an AIMS centre
Scholarship Benefits
Funded by a Google DeepMind donation, the program supports 40 scholars per year for four years starting September 2023. Benefits include:
– Full scholarships covering tuition and living costs
– Equipment and computation resources for research and study

– Curriculum Vitae (CV)
– Motivation letter (around 500 words)
– Academic transcripts
– Representative examples of mathematical sciences work (as specified on the application site)
– Coding problem (provided on the application site)
Note: The online application is not an exam. The coding and problem-solving tasks are designed to give the selection panel insight into how applicants approach challenges.
