PhD Research Areas
Applicants are invited to pursue doctoral research in one or more of the following fields:
- Paediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology
- Infectious Diseases Epidemiology
- Nutritional Epidemiology
- Non-Communicable Diseases Epidemiology
- Psychiatric Epidemiology
- Clinical Epidemiology
Eligibility and Candidate Profile
Successful applicants should demonstrate strong academic ability, research potential, and motivation for advanced study in epidemiology or biostatistics. Applicants should:
- Have completed, or be close to completing, a Master's degree in Epidemiology and/or Biostatistics
- Demonstrate excellence in prior academic and research work
- Show fluency in R for statistical analysis
- Have a clear research interest aligned with one or more of the listed epidemiology fields
- Possess strong written and verbal communication skills
- Be able to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-based research environment
- Demonstrate initiative and achievement in self-directed learning
Funding and Duration
The PhD awards are offered for an initial three-year period, with annual renewal based on satisfactory academic progress.
The funding package includes:
- Total value of R380,000 per year (tax-free)
- Coverage of UCT tuition fees
- Support for living expenses
Successful candidates will be required to pursue their doctoral studies full-time and based at UCT, actively participating in teaching, seminars, research activities, and the broader academic life of the School of Public Health.
