Applications are now open for the 2026 Japanese Government (MEXT) Teacher Training Scholarships. Offered by Japan Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT), these scholarships provide international teachers with the opportunity to conduct research on school education at designated Japanese universities.
The program aims to foster human resources who will serve as bridges of friendship between their home countries and Japan, contributing to educational development and global cooperation.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
– Hold nationality of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan (dual nationals must renounce Japanese nationality before arrival)
– Be born on or after April 2, 1991 (exceptions only for national circumstances such as military service or war-related disruptions)
– Be graduates of universities or teacher training schools
– Have at least five years of teaching experience at primary/secondary schools or teacher training institutions (excluding universities) by October 1, 2026
– Be willing to learn Japanese and deepen their understanding of Japan
– Submit a health certificate confirming no physical or mental conditions hindering study
Scholarship Period
– Duration: October 2026 (or start of course) to March 2028
– If enrollment begins September 1, 2026, the scholarship period starts then
– Continuation depends on maintaining good academic standing
Scholarship Benefits
– Allowance: 143,000 yen per month, plus 2,0003,000 yen regional allowance for designated areas
– Education Fees: Entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition fees waived
– Travel Expenses:
– Economy-class airfare from home country to Japan (fixed schedule/route)
– Return airfare upon completion of the program
