Applications are now open for the 2025/2026 A.S. Hornby Educational Trust Scholarships. These prestigious awards focus on capacity building for English language teaching in low- and middle-income countries.
The scholarships provide opportunities for teachers and related professionals to pursue a Master degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) at the University of Exeter, beginning in September 2026.
Up to ten fully funded scholarships will be awarded to academically talented and experienced applicants who demonstrate the potential to make a significant impact in the field of English language teaching and learning in their home countries.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must:
– Be residents of, and working in, a country classified as Least Developed, Low Income, Lower Middle Income, or Upper Middle Income (OECD DAC list)
– Have at least three years of full-time TESOL teaching or related professional experience after completing their first degree
– Hold an undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK upper second-class honours or higher
– Not already hold a doctoral degree in TESOL, applied linguistics, English, or related areas
– Not already hold a Master degree in TESOL, applied linguistics, English, or related areas from a UK university
Scholarship Benefits
The Hornby Scholarships are fully funded, covering:
– Full university tuition fees
– Monthly stipend to cover accommodation and living costs
– Grants for defined additional expenses
– UK visa and National Health Service (NHS) fees
– Return international travel costs
How to Apply
– Complete the Hornby Scholarship application form (no need to apply for the MEd TESOL Programme first).
– Shortlisted candidates will be contacted with instructions to apply for the MEd TESOL Programme at the University of Exeter.
– Scholarships will be awarded subject to acceptance into the MEd TESOL Programme.
